Porsche had lost their place as Champions of the 2 litre division of the Swedish Touring Car Championship with the 356 to the Lotus Elan in 1965 so for 1966 a Porsche 911 was to be used by Scania-Vabis, the Swedish Porsche agents, for the championship. Leif Hansen, director of Porsche sales at Scania Vabis and in charge of Porsche’s Swedish race and rally programme gave 303586 to Willy Dolling, who had previously run Scania-Vabis’ Carrera for Carl-Gunnar Hammarlund to win the 1961 & 1962 Swedish GT Championships, for preparation.
The car was stripped of extraneous weight and equipped wider wheels & tyres, anti-roll bars front & rear and uprated shock absorbers. Engine tuning mostly consisted of balancing, adjustments to the valves & cam shaft, carburettor work and fitting a Carrera 6 exhaust system. These improvements gave 165bhp against the standard unit’s 130bhp.
Scania-Vabis duly entered 303586 in the Swedish Touring Car Championship and reclaimed the 2 litre class driven by Leif Hansen, including a win at Karlskoga.
303586 was the first 911 to race in Sweden and subsequent owners continued to race and develop the car.
