A genuine, rare ‘matching numbers’ Porsche 356A 1600S - Convertible D
Designed as a more practical Speedster, the Convertible D was in production for one year only, when
Porsche introduced the 356 B with the T-5 body it was renamed the Roadster. Known as the Convertible D
because the cars were bodied by the German coachwork firm Drauz, a taller windscreen enabled Porsche
to use a folding top and wind-up windows, this gave much improved comfort and practicality whilst
preserving the verve of the Speedster. Only 1,331 Convertible Ds were built between August 1958 and
September 1959, before the T-5 B Roadster was introduced.
Chassis # 86678 is an excellent – corrosion free Black Plate Californian car. Originally supplied in July
1959, finished in Silver Metallic (5706), the car was purchased via Porsche main dealer - Georg
Rittersbacher in Kaiserslautern - by a US serviceman stationed in West Germany. He took it back to
California with him where it remained until 1989 winning numerous concours first prizes in Fresno,
Oakland, Monterey and Santa Cruz. On arrival in the UK the car underwent a bare metal respray in the
period-correct colour of Ruby Red, complete with original black vinyl interior and hood.

The car has always been well maintained in kept in exceptionally original condition. Since 2006, Maxted-
Page & Prill Limited has carried out all maintenance and improvements. During the time they have
maintained the car, the interior has been newly fitted with correct square weave carpet, the underside and
interior cavities have all been fully rust-protected and treated with waxoyl and the car has been regular
serviced and tuned with no expense spared. All work which has been carried out is fully documented on a
comprehensive history file which is offered with the car. This delightfully rare and exceptional Convertible
D, complete with tonneau and a fully documented history file, chassis #86678 is one of just five or so
examples of its type, known to be registered in the UK today.
